Marana is a town on the outskirts of Tucson that is located in Pima County, Arizona, and a small portion in located Pinal County.
According to the 2010 census, the population of the town is 34,961. Marana was the fourth fastest-growing place among all cities and towns in Arizona of any size from 1990 to 2000.
The town Marana was named for the Spanish word maraña (“thicket”) by 19th century railroad workers who had to clear a line through the area. Zthe area was predominantly a farming area, and cotton amongst other crops are grown there.
In 2007, Marana began hosting the PGA Tour‘s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. at Dove Mountain Gallery Golf Course and the Ritx Carlton Hotel when finished no hosts the Event in Februaury every year. The Event attracts the top 64 Players on the Tour and brings a lot of people to the area.
Marana also hosts a private air park Marana Regional Airport for smaller planes and also Pinal Airpark (Evergreen International Aviation). Many commercial airlines send their planes there for storage, and Pimal Pairpark used to be an air base for the CIA in the 1970′s and n 1980′s.
